You Don’t Have to Face OCD Alone
Living with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can feel overwhelming. Intrusive thoughts and repetitive rituals may seem impossible to control, leaving you exhausted, anxious, and frustrated. The good news is that effective, evidence-based treatment is available – and you don’t have to manage it alone.
At Cadence Psychology, our clinical psychologists in North Sydney, Pymble, and online offer compassionate, research-backed therapy to help you or your child break free from the cycle of obsessions and compulsions. We provide a safe, non-judgmental space to share what’s really going on, for both adults and young people.
What Is OCD?
OCD is more than being “neat” or “particular.” It involves two key parts:
Obsessions Persistent, unwanted thoughts or images that create anxiety, such as:
Fears of contamination or germs
Worries about harm or responsibility (e.g., leaving the stove on)
Disturbing or taboo thoughts
A need for symmetry, order, or perfection
Compulsions Repetitive behaviours or mental rituals performed to try to reduce the anxiety caused by obsessions, such as:
Excessive hand washing, cleaning, or showering
Checking locks, appliances, or tasks repeatedly
Counting, tapping, or arranging items in exact ways
Constantly seeking reassurance from others
While compulsions may bring short-term relief, they don’t stop the intrusive thoughts—often making the cycle stronger over time.
The Impact of Untreated OCD
When OCD is left untreated, it can:
Interfere with work, study, and daily responsibilities
Strain relationships with family, partners, or friends
Increase feelings of shame, guilt, or hopelessness
Lead to anxiety, depression, or burnout
Seeking support early can prevent OCD from taking over more areas of life and help you regain a sense of freedom.
Evidence-Based OCD Treatment
Our psychologists use proven therapies tailored to each individual. For the treatment of OCD, this most often includes:
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP): A highly effective form of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), ERP supports you in gradually facing triggers without resorting to compulsions—breaking the cycle step by step.
Mindfulness-Based Approaches: These techniques encourage acceptance of thoughts without reacting to them, reducing the grip of obsessions and compulsions over time.
